Treatments for Infected Teeth

When you have a deep cavity, have cracked your tooth, or your mouth develops gum disease, bacteria can enter the picture and cause an infection within your mouth. At times, you may notice swelling or the formation of a pus-filled pocket. If the pus does not drain, the area will keep getting worse. This is known as an abscess. It forms a wall around the tooth infection so that it does not spread to the rest of the body. An abscess may form fast and may cause extreme pain. If it is not treated, the problem will worsen. It will not go away on its own, so you should visit your dentist for assistance.

Don’t Ignore a Tooth Infection

It is essential to pay attention to your oral health. If you follow a regular oral care routine, the potential for developing an infection will be kept to a minimum. If an infection is ignored, it can cause irreversible damage to the bone and surrounding teeth, which can cause extreme problems. If you suspect an infection or abscess, it is essential to seek help immediately.

Common Tooth Infection Treatments

Most tooth infections result from decay that has gone untreated. As the issue worsens, an abscess may form. When this condition is uncovered, there are a few treatments that your dentist may use to stop your problem.

  • Root Canal: If there is a simple infection, a root canal treatment may be performed.  The American Dental Association explains that the center of your tooth will be drilled and cleaned with an antibacterial solution. A crown will be placed on top for stability, and the structure can be preserved. This means that the tooth will continue to function normally.
  • Extraction: If the infection is too severe, a tooth extraction may be necessary. If an abscess is present, it will need to be drained so that the infection does not spread.
  • Antibiotics:  In certain instances, a dentist may prescribe antibiotics to keep the infection from affecting other parts of your body. However, the medication will not eliminate the abscess, so further treatment will be necessary.

Prevention of Tooth Infections

No one wants to suffer the pain and misery of a tooth infection. It is not impossible to prevent issues. Following a solid oral care routine will keep your teeth and gums healthy so that an infection does not occur. Here are some ways to keep problems from starting:

  • Brush Twice a Day with a Fluoride Toothpaste
