The Importance of Catching Periodontal Disease Early

Periodontal disease has three stages- gingivitis, early periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis.  Recognizing the signs early and taking action is critical to prevent progression to the final stage, advanced periodontitis.

Gingivitis is typically indicated by gums that are tender, and also some bleeding during brushing or flossing.  At the initial stage, gingivitis is typically reversible as long as corrective actions are implemented.  Proper brushing and flossing daily among with regular professional cleanings will help to reverse gingivitis, and return your gums to a healthy state.

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress to the second and third stages of periodontal disease, early periodontitis and advanced periodontitis.  At these stages, advanced care is required that extends beyond measures you can take at home.  The final stage of periodontal disease requires pocket reduction which turns or pulls back the gingival tissue, removing tartar and smoothing the roots so that the gingival tissue can reattach.  Sometimes bone grafts may be a necessary part of the process to prevent the loss of teeth.

As you can see, catching periodontal disease early is the best way to prevent damage to your teeth and gums, and to avoid more drastic treatments.  Be on the lookout for the early warning signs mentioned above.  If you find yourself in need of professional periodontal therapies, please contact us at Stoner Periodontic Specialists in Columbus, Ohio.
