Standing as the county seat, Newark is the 20th largest city in Ohio. Before incorporating as a town, indigenous people lived along the river valleys for thousands of years before European contact. The first European-American settlers arrived in 1802 and were led by General William C. Schenck, who named the village after his New Jersey hometown.

Newark has continued to grow over the years, and as of today has a population of over 45,000 residents. The Ohio State University at Newark is the largest of The Ohio State University’s branch campuses. Newark is also home to the Longaberger Company’s headquarters, as well as a wide variety of local businesses and community based organizations. If visiting this area, be sure to check out the following wonderful attractions that make Newark such a wonderful place to visit.

The Newark Earthworks

Around the turn of the century, the native Hopewell tribe occupied the area that is now known as Newark. This tribe built several earthen mounds, along with one of the single biggest earthwork complexes in the region. Designated a National Historic Landmark, the Newark Earthworks are spread out over several miles, spanning nearly 3,000 feet. In addition to the incredible history this area represents, this area also provides access to several picnic tables and shelter houses for visitors to enjoy.

Barrel and Boar BBQ Gastropub

If you are in the Newark area and have worked up a healthy appetite, be sure to stop by the Barrel & Boar. Holding the distinction as one of the first commercial BBQ restaurant and caterers in the area, the food at this restaurant clearly demonstrates a passion for cooking quality bbq. There is a wide range of delicious entrée and appetizers to choose from, but the restaurant is best known for their delicious food brisket platter and burnt ends, with a mandatory side of collard greens and cornbread.

The Midland Theatre

While visiting Newark, be sure to check out the Midland Theater. Founded in 1928, the Newark Midland Theater has hosted the first run of classic films, beginning with the classics such as “Gone With the Wind” and “Dr. Zhivago.” Although it experienced its heyday throughout the 50s and 60s, the Midland fell on hard times during the late 70s. As a result, the business remained closed for over 14 years, and by the late 80’s, it stood in terrible disrepair and was slated for demolition. However, a group of committed locals banded together to save the building in 1992. 8 years later, and after raising nearly $10 million in renovation costs, the Midland triumphantly reopened its doors and began operating as the Newark Midland Theatre Association, a 501c3 certified, non-profit organization that is more vibrant than it has ever been. Today the Midland is in better shape than ever and people visiting the area can enjoy all the deluxe features of a modern movie going experience. Fun for the whole family, the Midland is the perfect place to go the enjoy local entertainment and cultural happenings in the Newark area.
