Downtown Activities

Historic Northwest Neighborhood
While strolling through downtown Delaware, be sure to spend some time at the Historic Northwest Neighborhood of the City of Delaware, where you can enjoy the sight of past historic homes and carriage houses. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this section of the city contains a wide variety of houses that range from early Federal style to French Eclic and Victorian Mansions. You will also be a short walk from the college campus of Ohio Wesleyan University.
Ohio Wesleyan University
Delaware is also home to Ohio Wesleyan University. Founded in 1842, Ohio Wesleyan is Delaware’s premier private liberal arts college. Ohio Wesleyan has consistently held the eleventh highest percentage of international students among liberal arts colleges. Notable alumni include Frank Sheerwood Rowland, who won the Noble Prize for Chemistry, as well as Lucy Webb Hayes, who holds the distinction of being the first First Lady to earn a degree from a collegiate university.
Perkins Observatory
For you stargazers out there, be sure to visit the historic Perkins Observatory. The Observatory offers observing programs each Friday and Saturday night, as well as monthly lectures that discuss a range of astronomy related topics. Additionally, the Observatory holds special events throughout the year, including telescope fairs and special viewings of unique astronomical events.
The Strand Theater
While in the area, be sure to catch the newest movie release at Delaware’s iconic Strand Theatre. First opened in 1916 and originally operating as a play house, the Strand holds the distinction of being the tenth longest operating movie theater in the United States. The Strand is the perfect place to relax and see the newest feature film.
The Little Brown Jug
If you happen to be in the area during the Labor Day holiday season, make sure to stop by and see Delaware’s famous race, one of the most coveted races for Standardbred horses. Hosted at the Delaware racetrack by the Agricultural Society, the Jug is a fantastic event that is fun for the whole family.
