Brushing Your Teeth For Good Oral Health

If you are like most people, you were told in childhood that you must brush your teeth every day. You may still wonder why brushing your teeth is essential to your oral health. When you know the importance of brushing, it can increase your healthy habits.

How Brushing Your Teeth Affects Your Oral Health

When you brush, bacteria and food residue are removed providing you with sparkling, clean teeth. Brushing reduces the plaque that can build up on and between your teeth, and when this sticky substance is removed it reduces your risk of cavities and gum disease. Plaque can eventually harden into tartar that can only be removed by dental instruments, with that said it can be an expensive visit to the dentist.

How Brushing Your Teeth Can Be Effective

A quick encounter with your toothbrush will not lead to overall increased oral health. There are some points to keep in mind when you want your teeth and gums to stay healthy.

For brushing to be useful, it must be done correctly and regularly. Brush your teeth at least twice each day allowing adequate time to thoroughly clean your teeth. Brush each tooth carefully, pay special attention to the gum line and brush the roof of your mouth and your tongue too. Bacteria can be present anywhere in your mouth.

For effective results, use the dental care equipment, toothbrush and toothpaste that is right for you described by your dentist. Your toothbrush should be cleaned and air-dried after each use, and you should replace your brush at least every six months. If you use an electric toothbrush, have been ill or the bristles are frayed on your manual brush, buy a new one.

Oral Health And Your Dentist

As it is impossible to remove every trace of plaque and residue with a toothbrush, schedule appointments for professional cleanings every six months. You can discuss oral health issues with your dentist, and your mouth will be clean and healthy.
