Gum Disease and the link to Alzheimer’s Patients

The Periodontists at Stoner Periodontic Specialists are specially trained in the support structures of the teeth and the conditions and the diseases that affect the supporting structures. One such disease is periodontal ( gum ) disease. Dr. Jason Stoner, Dr. Daniel Murphy and our hygienists work with general dentists to treat and prevent gum disease. The team at Stoner Periodontic Specialists uses progressive, state-of-the-art technology and therapies to help each patients reach complete wellness and health. We look to prevent gum disease by treating the underlying cause not just halting an already existing problem. We utilize this approach because we see that oral health is not an isolated issue, but rather a whole body health issue. In support of this holistic view is a recent article; the article in Bloomberg News, titled: Gum-Disease bacteria found in brains of Alzheimer’s patients, sheds yet another light on the importance of preventing gum disease and the systemic link between our mouth and body.

Gum Disease has been linked to many health risks, including the increased risk for developing heart disease and preterm / low birth weight of babies. This recent article in Bloomberg News discusses the recent findings, which were published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, of the link to Alzheimer’s Disease. Researchers studied the brains of Alzheimer’s patients; in their findings 4 of the 10 brain tissue samples showed signs of a bacteria – Porphyromonas gingivalis – which is found in the oral cavity and further is linked to periodontal disease. The researchers also studied tissue of 10 similarly aged brains of people who had never developed Alzheimer’s disease; in these brain tissue samples, there was no sign of the bacteria. To view a full copy of the article, Click Here.

The article shines a light on the theory that bacteria from the mouth enters the bloodstream and travels throughout our bodies, including the brain. It is important to practice good oral health, including regular flossing and brushing, which will keep bacteria in the mouth at a healthy level, thus making it less likely the bacteria will travel outside of the oral cavity. Some tips for brushing and flossing include:

Step One:

For the outer tooth surfaces, place the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle toward the gum line
Use gentle, short strokes, moving the brush back and forth against the teeth and gums.

Step Two:
Use this same motion to clean the chewing and inner tooth surfaces.

Step Three:
To clean the inner front tooth surfaces, hold the brush upright and use gentle up-and-down strokes with the tip of the brush.

Step Four:
Don’t forget to brush along the gum line, and make sure you reach the teeth right at the back
Also give your tongue a brushing – it’ll help keep your breath fresh!

Flossing

Step 1:
Take about 18 inches (50cm) of floss and loosely wrap most of it around each middle finger (wrapping more around one finger than the other) leaving 2 inches (5cm) of floss in between.

Step 2:
With your thumbs and index fingers holding the floss taut, gently slide it down between your teeth, while being careful not to snap it down on your gums.

Step 3:
Curve the floss around each tooth in a “C” shape and gently move it up and down the sides of each tooth, including under the gum line Unroll a new section of floss as you move from tooth to tooth.

At first, flossing might feel awkward. But stick with it! With just a little patience and practice, it will begin to feel as natural as brushing your teeth.
